JOHNSTON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST

"...the Churches of Christ salute you." - Romans 16:16

What We Believe

We believe in God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

1 John 5:7: "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

Matthew 3:16-17: "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: "And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

We believe that God sent his Son (Jesus) to be our Lord and Savior.

John 6:38-40: "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. "And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. "And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day."

Luke 19:10: "For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost."

We believe that to be saved we must fulfill the following requirements:

Hear the Gospel:

Romans 10:17: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Romans 1:16-17: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. "For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

Believe the Gospel:

John 8:24: "I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins."

Ephesians 1:13-14: "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise, "Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

Repent of our Sins:

Acts 17:30-31: "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: "Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."

Confess Christ as Lord:

Romans 10:9-10: "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Be Baptized for the Remission of Sins:

Matthew 28:18-20: "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and earth. "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

Acts 22:16: "And now why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."

We believe there is only One True Church and it was established by Jesus Christ.

Matthew 16: 16-18: "And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. "And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

We believe the One Church should wear only the name of Christ.

Acts 4: 11-12: "This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. "Neither is there salvation in an other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

Philippians 2:9-11: "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; "And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

1 Corinthians 3:11: "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

Colossians 1:18: "And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence."

1 Corinthians 12:27: "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular."

Romans 16:16: "Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you."

We believe we must worship according to scripture.

Communion (breaking of bread) takes place every Sunday.

Acts 20:7: "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight."

1 Corinthians 11:23-24: "For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: "And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me."

Acts 2:42: "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

Giving takes place every Sunday.

1 Corinthians 16:1-2: "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. "Upon the first day of the week let everyone of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."

Preaching takes place every Sunday.

Acts 20:7: "And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight."

Praying takes place every Sunday.

Acts 2:42: "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."

1 Thessalonians 5:17: "Pray without ceasing."

Singing (without mechanical instruments) takes place every Sunday.

Hebrews 2:12: "Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee."

Colossians 3:16: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Ephesians 5:19: "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." Matthew 26:30: "And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives."

1 Corinthians 14:15: "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

We believe that Christ wants us to be ONE - without division among us.

Ephesians 4:1-6: "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, "With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. "There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, "One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all."

1 Corinthians 10:1-4: "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; "And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; "And did eat the same spiritual meat; "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

1 Corinthians 1:10-13: "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. "For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. "Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. "Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? Or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"

Romans 16:17-18: "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. "For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good works and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple."

John 17:11: "And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are."

John 17:20-21: "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

??? BIBLE ANSWERS TO COMMON BIBLE QUESTIONS ???

When was the church established?

The church/kingdom of the Bible was established on the day of Pentecost as documented in Acts Chapter 2. It was also established in the right place as prophesied in the old testament (Isaiah 2:2,3; Joel 2:28-32).

Who built the Church of Christ?

Knowing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, it is a certainty that Jesus Christ built His Church. When Peter declared that Jesus Christ was the Son of the living God, Christ answered, “And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:15-28). Christ’s Church was established in the city of Jerusalem in the year 33 A.D., on the first Pentecost after his resurrection from the dead which the full account can be found in the book of Acts, Chapter 2.

Does the Church of Christ have a doctrine?

The Church of Christ has no doctrine of it's own. The infallible doctrine to guide the church is the doctrine of Christ, the doctrine of God, the New Testament. The Church is made up of fallible creatures, men and women redeemed by the blood of Christ, therefore if the church had it's own doctrine originating with the church it would be a fallible doctrine subject to mistakes of men. Jesus warned of the serious consequences of the doctrines of men leading souls away from God. (Matthew 15:9) states, “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men" (KJV). Upon the establishment of the Lord’s Church, Acts 2:42 of the KJV states that they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine. The apostle was divinely guided by the Holy Spirit in the revelation of the doctrine of Christ, which was to guide the church.

Who is the head of the church?

Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the head of his church, with all authority in the church. (Matthew 28:18) “All authority hath been given to me in heaven and on earth.” To the Lord’s church at Ephesus and the church at Colosse the inspired Apostle declared that God gave Christ to be head over all things to the church which is his body.” (Eph. 1:22,23; Col: 1: 17,18)

Should the Bible be the authority for everything?

Yes, because God gave the Scriptures and they are complete and sufficient for instructing us in every work that is pleasing to God. The Holy Spirit moved Paul to write, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Therefore, any work in religion that is NOT FURNISHED by the Scriptures is not a good work.

Why do you not want to belong to a denomination?

The origin of all denominations, including Catholicism, can be traced back to hundreds of years after the day of Pentecost. Thus we can conclude, on this point alone, that today’s denominations are not the true church of the bible that Jesus died on the cross for, the church in which it's members will be saved (Ephesians. 5:23; Acts 2:47) and are enrolled in heaven (Hebrews 12:23). God has given us NO authority in his word for being members of anything except the ONE body, the church of the Lord (Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:4-6; 1 Corinthians 12:13). When Paul wrote these words there was only one body in existence. Everyone who obeyed the gospel was a member of that one body. The New Testament urges us to be Christians (Acts 26:28), but it does not teach us to be anything else. Denominations were unknown in the days of the apostles, thus no one was a member of any denomination when the New Testament was written. Denominations were all founded by men hundreds of years after the Lord built his church.
